Irvington Theater Usher
Department: Front of House
Reports to: Box Office Manager / House Manager
Employment Type: Part-Time as Needed Appointment
Compensation: $20 per hour
Typical Shift: Approximately 3 hours per performance
Position Summary
The Usher is a welcoming and visible member of the Front of House team. Ushers provide courteous and professional assistance to patrons, help ensure a safe and orderly environment, and support the smooth operation of performances and events.
This is a part-time as needed position. Available shifts vary based on the performance calendar. Usher shifts are generally approximately three hours per performance.
Responsibilities
Welcome patrons, check tickets, and assist guests in finding their seats.
Be familiar with the theater layout, seating, exits, restrooms, water fountains, and accessibility procedures.
Close and open auditorium doors and manage house lighting before, during, and after performances and intermission.
Assist with late seating at the discretion of management, using a flashlight when necessary.
Monitor the theater for safety concerns and lost-and-found items.
Politely enforce house rules, including no smoking, outside food or drink, talking, flash photography, or leaning over balcony/box railings.
Assist patrons with disabilities and other special needs.
Remain at assigned post during performances and communicate patron concerns or emergencies to management.
Attend required usher meetings and training.
Assist with other Front of House duties as directed.
Requirements
Reliable, punctual, and accountable.
Excellent customer service and communication skills. Friendly, professional, and able to handle a variety of situations with tact and discretion.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to stand for extended periods and repeatedly use stairs, ramps, and theater doors.
Ability to work in dim lighting, noise, and crowded environments.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds as needed.
Must maintain a neat appearance and wear the required usher badge, uniform, and dark pants.
Two-way radio experience preferred.
Availability for evenings, weekends, holidays, and other scheduled performances.
Previous customer service, theater experience or a personal interest in the performing arts is helpful but not required.
Emergency Awareness: Ushers must be familiar with theater evacuation procedures and follow all instructions from management during an emergency.
